Back Pain

Back pain is the most common reason people seek Chiropractic care. It can considerably disrupt your everyday life and, if left untreated, can lead to the development of sprains, strains, disc bulges, degenerative joint disease (DJD) and stress. Globally, low back pain is THE leading cause of disability, of which 80-90% of all people are likely to experience at some stage.

Chiropractic care has shown to be one of the most effective and safe ways of treating back pain. In our practice, we combine thorough history, physical examination and diagnostic imaging to address the root cause of your back pain. With the use of postural analysis, motion palpation and x-rays where indicated, we can help you reach your health goals!

The majority of back pain is caused by

Microtraumas – these injuries commonly result from repetitive and frequent overuse of the spine’s muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. In combination with sedentary habits, poor posture and poor sitting and lifting techniques can trigger back pain events.
Macrotraumas – injuries to the spine caused by falls, sporting injuries, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and work injuries.

If we look more closely at a spinal level, the most common causes of back pain include:

  • Sprains, strains & spasms – overloading soft tissue and the spine
  • Disc bulge or herniation – can cause debilitating pain, which can lead to neurological or spinal damage. If severe enough, it can cause pins & needles, muscle weakness, pain and numbness/tingling.
  • Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) – if left untreated, inflammation and wear and tear to the spinal facet joints cause pain, stiffness, decreased normal range of motion. This can lead to severe disc degeneration.
  • Stress – when the body is stressed, this can tense your body and your sympathetic nervous system kicks in. Long-term stress can lead to a variety of health problems including loss of normal functioning spine, flexibility and structure.
