Neck Pain

Neck pain can be caused by a number of factors ranging from nerve compression, trauma and fractures. To help alleviate pain and stiffness relating to neck and shoulder pain, Chiropractic care may involve specific neck adjustments, postural exercises, rehabilitation exercises, as well as advice on lifestyle factors or habits that are contributing to the problem.

Neck and shoulder pain is an extremely broad topic. It can include common symptoms, which include:

  • Neck tension & Shoulder tension
  • Acute neck pain (torticollis or wry neck)
  • Stiffness and reduced function
  • It is important when looking at neck issues to consider:
  • Posture and sleeping positions
  • Repetitive lifestyle factors
  • Excessive use of computers, laptops, and mobile phones
    Stress levels

Neck pain of a musculoskeletal origin can be attributed to the muscles themselves, joint strain (ligamentous) and from disc injuries.

Disc problems in the neck are common, with symptoms which include referred pain, pins and needles or numbness from the neck into the shoulders and hands. Disc problems are often a result of long standing stress and strain on the neck and can be safely assessed and diagnosed by your chiropractor.

Joint strain is one of most common sources of neck pain. This can tend to occur as a result of longstanding pressure and strain, repetitive movements, and stress on the neck. Patients presenting with ligament or joint strain may be acute presentations (torticollis and wry neck) or chronic pain, in the form of stiffness and restricted range of motion.

Muscle strain and strain around the shoulders and neck is also common. Postural alignment changes require muscles to work harder to keep us neutral. Patients report that massage helps but does not fix the problem.

Elia Chiropractic is aimed at providing you with a thorough history and examination. Following our initial assessment, we will work out the next steps needed to help diagnose how you have presented and determine if chiropractic is the right approach for you.
